The Earth's natural elements can support you throughout your day. Welcome in the beauty & vitality available in your natural surroundings by simply noticing what you appreciate about it & focussing in on that. Drawing on what nourishes you this way consciously interrupts the habit of letting past or future steal in to distract you from whats available to you in the here & now.
Whether you've taken the Nurture Wheel for a spin & landed in the Earth element or simply chosen Earth as a focal point for inviting TLC in, the body-mind practice below dips into the nurture available now.
1 How tuned into your exchange with the earth are you? Imagine a ruby dial in front of you labeled 'EARTH'
2 Literally reach out with one hand & imagine turning the dial until your hand stops. Did it go 1/3 of the way - 2/3rds or full circle?
3 If your dial turned to the first 1/3 consider it 'rest & root'; 2/3rds of a turn is more like growth; Full circle? it's bloom & harvest time.
4 Read through step 5 to get clear on what's next, then soften & close your eyes, take a breath or two & complete step 5.
5 Imagine a time [possibly imagined] when you felt a relationship or connection with the natural world. Stay with it & bring up as much detail as possible - include smells & sounds to let it really land in your body. Once this is fully taken in, begin to scan your body for any sensations & stay with them for a moment or so.
6 Repeat steps 1 and 2 to recheck your 'EARTH' dial. Notice what seems different now both on your dial & in the body [if anything] to take measure of what effect there is when you feed your sense of connection with the earth for even just a moment.
This practice activates your parasympathetic nervous system to calm the fight, flight or freeze impulses. It also strengthens the connective tissue - or bridge - between the right & left sides of your brain to create more balance, calm & grace as you approach any situation you may face. As you explore mindful, body-centered practices like these, self-awareness, self-regulation & self-compassion grows!
