We exert our personal will on our immediate environment by choosing the qualities & characteristics of what's in the space aound us.
These choices support the lifestyle we live, for better or worse. If we organize the elements of our home or workplace to align with our personal values & highest priorities, we feel fully supported by our surroundings - especially during change & transition.
Whether you've taken the Nurture Wheel for a spin & landed in the Space element or simply chosen Space as a focal point for inviting TLC in, the body-mind practice below dips into the nurture available now.
Space Nurture Practice
1 How tuned into your relationship with the space around you do you feel? Imagine a golden dial in front of you labeled 'SPACE'.
2 Literally reach out & imagine turning the dial until your hand stops. Did it turn 1/3 of the way around, about 2/3rds or full circle?
3 If your dial turned to the first 1/3 consider it 'rest & root'; 2/3rds of a turn is more like growth; Full circle? it's bloom & harvest time.
4 Read step 5 to get clear on what you're going to do next, then soften & close your eyes, take a breath or two & complete step 5.
5 Draw to mind a time [perhaps recent or maybe an imagined event] when you felt supported by your surroundings.
Stay with this image & continue to bring up as much detail about it as possible, include the smells or sounds noticed to let it really land in the body. Once this is fully taken in, begin to scan your body for any sensations present. If there are, put your hand there.
6 Repeat steps 1 and 2 to recheck your dial. Notice what seems different now both on your dial & in the body to take measure of what happens when you feed your sense of connection with the space around you for even just a moment.
Taking a few minutes now to think about how our choices of what we surround ourselves with influences our well-being is worth it! One act of nurture in the space around us creates a feeling of space within us where we can consciously choose what's most meaningful & supportive to us. Kitchen & eating areas whose space, colour and easy flow invite us to enjoy preparing and sharing meals foster deep connections between us that will support us through the rough go's we are bound to face: That well-planned layout of a workspace sparks creative new projects, giving form to our own brand of creative expression. Nurturing space goes beyond our physical surroundings into feeling spacious about our time so we're more likely to stop, reflect & enjoy a calm mind in the midst of busy times.
